St. Catharines, ON (Tuesday, January 31, 2012) – General Motors of Canada will recall 42 employees to work on the six speed front-wheel drive transmission line in the St. Catharines Powertrain Facility.  These employees will return to work on February 13th as part of the ramp-up of transmission production which formally began on January 3rd, 2012.

Additionally, General Motors will invest $8.8 million at St. Catharines Powertrain to ready the facility to manufacture the next generation of the six speed front wheel drive transmissions.  As a result of this investment, machinery will begin to be installed in the prismatics and assembly areas of the transmission line in the summer of 2012 in preparation for a future start of production.

“We look forward to these employees' return on our new transmission line as we continue to ramp up production,” said Carolyne Watts, plant manager of the GM St. Catharines Powertrain Facility.  “I'm also pleased we are announcing a further investment in St. Catharines to add the future manufacturing capacity for the next generation of the six speed front wheel drive transmission.”

The six-speed transmission built in St. Catharines offers customers a wide range of benefits including improved fuel efficiency and vehicle performance.  The plant will supply transmissions to both the CAMI Assembly plant in Ingersoll and the Oshawa Assembly Plant for the Chevrolet Equinox, GMC Terrain and Buick Regal.  The new transmission is based on the proven design of GM’s current Hydra-matic 6T40/45 transmission, which has established a strong reputation for its refinement, durability and fuel efficiency, for over a million customers around the world.
